The Imitation of Christ, Thomas à Kempis's devotional classic of the 15th Century, is one of the most popular spiritual manuals of all time (second only to the Bible). It defined the path of Chrsitian discipleship from the world, prayer, and obedience to the will of God.

Nevertheless, Thomas' focus omitted a good deal of the gospel - notably, the actual life and teachings of Jesus. In his "reply" to Thomas, Boff sets out to complement The Imitation with a message that speaks to our own time. In the style of the original text, he juxtaposes the voice of Jesus with the voice of a spiritual director, counseling readers on what it means both to "imitate Christ" and to "follow Jesus".
